    Revisiting Constraints on Fourth Generation Neutrino Masses

    We revisit the current experimental bounds on fourth-generation Majorana neutrino masses, including the effects of right handed neutrinos. Current bounds from LEPII are significantly altered by a global analysis. We show that the current bounds on fourth generation neutrinos decaying to eW and mu W can be reduced to about 80 GeV (from the current bound of 90 GeV), while a neutrino decaying to tau W can be as light as 62.1 GeV. The weakened bound opens up a neutrino decay channel for intermediate mass Higgs, and interesting multi-particle final states for Higgs and fourth generation lepton decays.Comment: 7 pages 1 fi

    Recognition of 3-D Objects from Multiple 2-D Views by a Self-Organizing Neural Architecture

    The recognition of 3-D objects from sequences of their 2-D views is modeled by a neural architecture, called VIEWNET that uses View Information Encoded With NETworks. VIEWNET illustrates how several types of noise and varialbility in image data can be progressively removed while incornplcte image features are restored and invariant features are discovered using an appropriately designed cascade of processing stages. VIEWNET first processes 2-D views of 3-D objects using the CORT-X 2 filter, which discounts the illuminant, regularizes and completes figural boundaries, and removes noise from the images. Boundary regularization and cornpletion are achieved by the same mechanisms that suppress image noise. A log-polar transform is taken with respect to the centroid of the resulting figure and then re-centered to achieve 2-D scale and rotation invariance. The invariant images are coarse coded to further reduce noise, reduce foreshortening effects, and increase generalization. These compressed codes are input into a supervised learning system based on the fuzzy ARTMAP algorithm. Recognition categories of 2-D views are learned before evidence from sequences of 2-D view categories is accumulated to improve object recognition. Recognition is studied with noisy and clean images using slow and fast learning. VIEWNET is demonstrated on an MIT Lincoln Laboratory database of 2-D views of jet aircraft with and without additive noise.     Embedding the Pentagon

    The Pentagon Model is an explicit supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, which involves a new strongly-interacting SU(5) gauge theory at TeV-scale energies. We show that the Pentagon can be embedded into an SU(5) x SU(5) x SU(5) gauge group at the GUT scale. The doublet-triplet splitting problem, and proton decay compatible with experimental bounds, can be successfully addressed in this context. The simplest approach fails to provide masses for the lighter two generations of quarks and leptons; however, this problem can be solved by the addition of a pair of antisymmetric tensor fields and an axion.Comment: 39 page

    Representing addition and subtraction : learning the formal conventions

    The study was designed to test the effects of a structured intervention in teaching children to represent addition and subtraction. In a post-test only control group design, 90 five-year-olds experienced the intervention entitled Bi-directional Translation whilst 90 control subjects experienced typical teaching. Post-intervention testing showed some significant differences between the two groups both in terms of being able to effect the addition and subtraction operations and in being able to determine which operation was appropriate. The results suggest that, contrary to historical practices, children's exploration of real world situations should precede practice in arithmetical symbol manipulation

    Acoustic microbubble trapping in blood mimicking fluid

    Microbubble (MB) volumetric pulsations can be selectively seeded with external ultrasonic fields. The therapeutic use of this phenomenon encompass mechanical thrombolysis and targeted drug deliveries through sonoporating endothelial cells. However, expected outcomes are still plagued by low bubble concentrations and short circulation time after administration. MBs preferentially flow along the centerline of large vessels which deteriorates biological targeting methodology in the case of vascular disease treatment with MBs. Simultaneous MB imaging and trapping against high flow rates has been recently proposed by instantaneously switching optimized ultrasonic beams. Principles were previously validated by circulating MBs with purified water through a flow phantom. But differences between blood and water call for preliminary investigations with blood mimicking fluid (BMF). This study demonstrated the capability of trapping bubbles in BMF with the acoustic trap but with nearly 40% efficiency reduction over the control in water, being present by the suppressed increase of image brightness

    Simultaneous trapping and imaging of microbubbles at clinically relevant flow rates

    Mechanisms for non-invasive target drug delivery using microbubbles and ultrasound have attracted growing interest. Microbubbles can be loaded with a therapeutic payload and tracked via ultrasound imaging to selectively release their payload at ultrasound-targeted locations. In this study, an ultrasonic trapping method is proposed for simultaneously imaging and controlling the location of microbubbles in flow by using acoustic radiation force. Targeted drug delivery methods are expected to benefit from the use of the ultrasonic trap, since trapping will increase the MB concentration at a desired location in human body. The ultrasonic trap was generated by using an ultrasound research system UARP II and a linear array transducer. The trap was designed asymmetrically to produces a weaker radiation force at the inlet of the trap to further facilitate microbubble entrance. A pulse sequence was generated that can switch between a long duration trapping waveform and short duration imaging waveform. High frame rate plane wave imaging was chosen for monitoring trapped microbubbles at 1 kHz. The working principle of the ultrasonic trap was explained and demonstrated in an ultrasound phantom by injecting SonoVue microbubbles flowing at 80 mL/min flow rate in a 3.5 mm diameter vessel

    Oral contraceptives and cervical cancer--further findings from the Oxford Family Planning Association contraceptive study.

    In 1983, we reported results from the Oxford Family Planning Association contraceptive study regarding the association between oral contraceptives (OCs) and cervical neoplasia, after a 10 year follow-up of a cohort of 17,000 women. Further findings from this study are reported here after an additional 12 years of follow-up. A nested case--control design was used in which cases were all women diagnosed under 45 years of age with invasive carcinoma (n = 33), carcinoma in situ (n = 121) or dysplasia (n = 159). Controls were randomly selected from among cohort members and matched to cases on exact year of birth and clinic attended at recruitment to study. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to determine odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with various aspects of OC use relative to never users adjusted for social class, smoking, age at first birth and ever use of diaphragm or condom. Ever users of OCs had a slightly elevated OR for all types of cervical neoplasia combined (OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.00-1.96). Odds ratios were highest for invasive carcinoma (OR = 4.44, 95% CI 1.04-31.6), intermediate for carcinoma in situ (OR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.00-3.00) and lowest for dysplasia (OR = 1.07, 95% CI 0.69-1.66). The elevated risk associated with OC use appeared to be largely confined to current or recent (last use in the past 2 years) long-term users of OCs. Among current or recent users, ORs for all types of cervical neoplasia combined were 3.34 (95% CI 1.96-5.67) for 49-72 months of use, 1.69 (95% CI 0.97-2.95) for 73-96 months and 2.04 (95% CI 1.34-3.11) for 97 or more months. These results suggest a possible effect of OC use on later stages of cervical carcinogenesis, although residual confounding due to sexual factors or human papillomavirus (HPV) infection cannot be ruled out
